Shoppers keen to snap up a bargain are racing to Wilko as shelves are 'stripped bare'. Gardening items and pet food are among the items heavily discounted following the announcement that the high street giant is on the brink of collapse.

A total of 400 stores and 12,000 jobs are at risk unless the company finds a rescue deal before August 13.

The budget chain, which sells a vast array of bargain homewares and household essentials, has branches in Hanley, Longton, Newcastle, Leek, Stafford and Uttoxeter.

When StokeonTrentLive visited the Hanley store, there was still plenty of items for sale but there were noticeable gaps on the shelves.

Taking to social media, one woman posted a photo of the incredible assortment of flower seeds she managed to get from the store. She got herself three zinnia, one aster and two sunflower seed mixes for just £2.25 following the reductions.

The sunflower seeds are usually £2 each, but were on sale for £1.20. In the caption, she told viewers: “Thinking ahead to next year.. Wilko 70% off seeds.”

Another woman, meanwhile, managed to get her hands on some cat food that was on sale for a steal price. While the 750g Scrumbles Dry Cat Food Salmon usually costs £7.50, she managed to get it for just £2.50.

In the caption of the Facebook post, which was shared on Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, she wrote: “Found at Wilko store, the 750g bags of adult scrumbles were reduced to £2.50, salmon the only flavour left.

“But it's good to check Wilko frequently and buy then and there cause reductions seem to come and go very frequently. As a bonus, the company is teetering on collapse, bad for the company and staff, but lots of things reduced. Seen bedding down to £2 and such."

Wilko - previously named Wilkinson’s before a name change in 2014 - filed a Notice of Intention on August 3 which is used to notify stakeholders that a company intends to enter administration. This has put all of its 400 stores at risk of closure.
